Enrolment Procedure
Enrolment in Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education courses is either directly with the institute or through authorised education agents only.
- The applicant accesses institute and course information on the web or through an education agent, including enrolment procedure, fee structures, commencement dates and refund policy.
- The applicant submits completed enrolment form along with supporting documents as requested on the form to the institute or education agent.
- The enrolment officer assesses the enrolment form and supporting documents, and issues enrolment and fees agreement to the successful candidates.
- On receipt of the completed enrolment and fees agreement and the required fees, the student is issued with an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).
- As required, the student follows relevant procedures to apply for visa at the Australian High Commission.
Course deferment
International students on student visa can apply for course deferment only on exceptional circumstances beyond the control of students, such as, medical reasons, bereavement. Reasons like festive occasions, weddings, pregnancy are not accounted as acceptable grounds for deferment. The application for course deferment should include the duration and reason, and must be supported by relevant documents. Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education will update such information into Student Course Variation. DIAC may initiate visa cancellation if the deferral is for more than one semester.
Domestic students are able to apply for course deferment at the institute. This may incur an administration fee.
Orientation
On commencing the course, students are required to attend the orientation program of the institute. A student handbook will be given to every student and the instructor will conduct an induction session that will include topics such as:
- Mission and vision of Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education
- Living and studying in Australia/Adelaide
- Protection for overseas students and relevant legislations
- Student Rights and Responsibilities
- Student visa requirements
- Course content, timetable and other requirements/obligations
- Recognition of Prior Learning and Recognition of Current Competence
- Medical, Welfare and Guidance services
- Attendance and progress monitoring
- Complaints and Appeals procedures
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) support
- Learning strategies and Assessment procedures
- Attainment of Qualification
- Emergency Evacuation Procedures
English Language Requirement
Students must be able to read, write and understand the English language. Evidence of English proficiency is a requirement for acquiring a student visa.
For admission to our courses, English language proficiency must be demonstrated by achieving one of the following minimum standards:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 5.5 band
- Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 550
- Combined Universities Language Test (CULT) 60%
- Australian Second Language Proficiency Rating (ASLPR) 3+
Students who do not attain the minimum English language requirements may enrol in an English language course prior to commencing course with Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education. Please contact the institute or education agent for advise on English courses in Australia.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)
Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education aims at all times to provide a positive and rewarding learning experience for all students. In the event of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) becoming an issue, the Client Services Officer will contact the student to discuss the requirements.
Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education will make every effort to ensure that students are adequately supported to enable completion of their training. Some examples of the type of support from the institute will include:
Language:
- Presenting information in small chunks and speaking clearly, concisely and not too quickly
- Giving clear instructions in a logical sequence
- Giving lots of practical examples
- Encouraging you to ask questions
- Asking questions to ensure you understand
Literacy:
- Providing you only essential writing tasks
- Considering the use of group exercises
- Providing examples and models of completed tasks
- Ensuring that documents and forms are written and formatted in plain English
- Using clear headings, highlighting certain keywords or phrases
- Providing explanations of all technical terms used
Numeracy:
- Showing you how to do the calculation through step-by-step instructions and through examples of completed calculations
- Helping you to work out what maths calculation and measurements are required to complete the tasks
- Encouraging the use of calculators and demonstrating how to use them
Accommodation and Airport Pick-up
If required, Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education can arrange airport pick-up and initial accommodation for overseas students coming to Adelaide. The request for such an arrangement should be made on the enrolment form. Reasonable rates will be charged for organizing airport pick-ups or accommodation, and will be communicated to the students prior to coming to Adelaide.
OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)
Australia has a very modern and efficient health care system. It is subsidised by the Australian Government. OSHC is a type of insurance that allows you to use the Australian healthcare system and it covers the costs for any medical or hospital care which you may need while studying in Australia. It will also pay for some prescription drugs and emergency ambulance transport.
If you are an international student studying in Australia, you must purchase an approved OSHC policy from a registered health benefits organisation – commonly referred to as health funds – before applying for your visa. You will need to buy OSHC before you come to Australia, to cover you from when you arrive. You will also need to maintain OSHC throughout your stay in Australia.

Flexible Learning Strategies and Assessment Procedures
Flexible learning and assessment procedures form part of our learning and assessment strategies and are integral to the concept of competency-based training. The programs will take special needs into consideration from the planning stage onwards and adopt reasonably flexible methods as appropriate.
Training includes:
- Providing students with learning material and toolkits
- Classroom teaching and hands-on practical sessions
- Comfortable and friendly learning environment
- Small class sizes
- Access to hairdressing salon environment
Assessments are conducted in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Appropriate and valid forms of assessment utilised for both skills and knowledge may include:
- Evaluation of direct products of work
- Natural observation
- Skill tests, simulations and projects
- Evaluation of underpinning knowledge and understanding
- Questioning and discussion
- Evidence from prior activity
Welfare and Guidance services
Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education has experienced staff who can advise students in all aspects of student life including:

Complaints and Appeals
Unitech Institute of Technical and Further Education views resolution of constructive and valid complaints or appeals as a way improving our organisation. We will adhere to the National Complaints Code to respond to complaints and appeals about vocational education and the organisation itself. This means we take action on all validated complaints and appeals and that our complaints and appeals investigation process will be:
- well publicised and explained;
- accessible so you can lodge complaints by phone, electronically or in writing;
- fair and protect your rights;
- free so you can lodge a complaint without charge;
- handled in a manner that protects your privacy;
- transparent, equitable, objective and unbiased;
- comprehensive so that it effectively resolves a variety of complaints such as student dissatisfaction, assessment outcomes, poor service, fraud, misconduct etc;
- implemented effectively and efficiently to ensure complaints are resolved within an acceptable timeframe;
- monitored, recorded and reported to the appropriate people; and
- an input or trigger point to our continuous improvement process.
Instances could arise where you may wish to resolve a problem with personalities or the way a course has been delivered or to appeal against assessment results. Unitech Institute of Technical and Further Education must be objective and ensure the validity of the process and learning outcomes. Each complaint and appeal and its outcome is recorded in writing and a letter stating the outcome and the reasons for the outcome are supplied.
Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education has its complaints and appeals procedures outlined in the Student Handbook. Every effort is made to resolve any matter internally. Students have the right to appeal a decision made by Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education and take it to the next level as explained in the Student Handbook.
Student Responsibilities and Code of Conduct
A student of Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education has the responsibility to:
- Satisfy student visa conditions at all times
- Maintain Overseas Student Health Cover for the period of his/her stay in Australia
- Meet the terms of the written agreement with the provider
- Maintain satisfactory course progress
- Follow providers’ attendance policy
- Refrain from using mobile phones, pagers and other disruptive devices in the class
- Treat staff and fellow students with respect and fairness. This includes but is not limited to:
- Following reasonable directions from a member of staff
- Not behaving in any way that may offend, embarrass or threaten others
- Not harassing fellow students or staff by for example using offensive language
- Taking care of facilities by not damaging, stealing, modifying or misusing property
- Acting in a safe manner that does not place you or others at risk
- Ensure your personal details with Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education are current and correct
- Participate in all assessment tasks as scheduled, honestly and to the best of your ability
- Not to smoke in non-smoking areas
- Not to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
- Follow normal safety practices
Student Selection and Access and Equity

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The RPL process encourages you to apply for recognition for previous study, work, life and educational experiences that match the units of competency, qualification or part thereof modules within our training and assessment programs.
If you are applying for recognition of existing skills and knowledge, then you will generate evidence to support your claim with information and support for a trainer/assessor. Examples of evidence might include: an initial conversation/interview; documentation such as certificates issued by other training organisations, support letters from employers; job description, resume or outlines of previous training and development. We also recognise the credentials issued by other training organisations operating under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF).
To apply for RPL, discuss your skills recognition and assessment options with the Principal. Read the Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education recognition information kit and complete and submit the request for Recognition of Prior Learning form.
Skills recognition assessment will be planned and organised with qualified assessors who will conduct the assessment in consultation with you and your workplace. Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education will engage with industry/competency experts to assist in the assessment process.
International students are advised that where this recognition is granted by Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education prior to the issue of a visa, the net course duration as reduced by RPL will be indicated on the eCoE. Where RPL is granted after the student visa is issued, then Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education will review your enrolment to ensure you maintain full study load with supplementary materials and supervised study.
Facilities and Equipment
Unitech Institute of Technical And Further Education maintains theory and practical training rooms with modern and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Students have access to necessary instructional and assessment facilities, materials and equipment. Training facilities include but are not limited to:
- Small class sizes to facilitate a better learning environment

- Hairdressing toolkits
- Well equipped commercial hairdressing salons including modern workstations and basins
- Student-to-workstation ratio of 1 to 1 in salons
- Student relaxation/meal break areas

Protection of Student Fees
Unitech protects students’ fees through membership of Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) and through OSTAS and the ESOS Assurance Fund.
Legislative Requirements
Unitech follows all relevant Commonwealth and State laws covering OH&S, workplace harassment, victimisation and bullying, anti-discrimination, including equal opportunity, access and equity, racial vilification, disability discrimination as prescribed in the: OH&S Act, EEO, Access & Equity and anti Discrimination and Harassment Acts.
